Homegrown mobile phone producer, Lava International Ltd will invest ₹250 crore on research & development (R&D) facilities in India and China over the next two years.
“We will add engineers, infrastructure, testing laboratories and equipment both in India and China particularly for software development in areas such as artificial intelligence,” said Gaurav Nigam, Product Head, Lava International, here on Tuesday.
Speaking at the launch of LAVA Z61 smartphone, Nigam said, Lava has design centres in India and China which employ over 700 engineers. “We are planning to increase the number of engineers as part of our expansion strategy and to meet new product demand,” he added.
Priced at ₹5,750, the Z61 with ‘sharp click’ technology comes with a 5.45-inch FHD+ display, 1GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, 8MP autofocus rear camera, 5MP front camera, in black and gold colour options. Z61 variant with 2GB RAM is slated for release in August 2018.
The company has capacity to produce three million handsets annually and is in the process of setting up manufacturing facilities at in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, and Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh.
