With 35 data centres, Mumbai has topped the chart in the maximum number of data centre operators in India. It is because the city is one of the global cable landing locations in the country, according to CBRE, a real estate consulting firm.

Cable landing stations are vital international telecommunication links between countries across the world, therefore, an important element in telecommunication services including broadband connectivity. Currently, Mumbai has four out of the ten cable landing stations in India.

Bengaluru and NCR have ranked second and third respectively in the number of data centres operators in India.

The report, “India Viewpoint: Is India the next frontier for the Data CentreIndustry”, identified a growing economy, rapidly expanding consumer base, increasing domestic and international demand from corporates as some factors responsible for promoting India as a potential data centre hub.

“India holds massive potential to become the ‘next destination’ for data centres, driven by demand created by businesses. Overall, the DC market outlook looks positive on the back of the availability of land and skilled talent pool along with a huge, untapped market,” Anshuman Magazine, Chairman, India and South-East Asia, CBRE, said.

The report states that there still are several states in India which are yet to formulate policies for this segment. Issues such as a cumbersome approval process for the acquisition of infrastructure and prolonged environmental clearances also need to be addressed, the report said.
