Samsung’s new series of printers with near-field communication (NFC) capability, which will allow printing from smartphones, will be available in the Indian market in a couple of months.

The Xpress C4XX series, which was unveiled at Samsung Electronics’ headquarters near Seoul on May 19, consists of three models: colour laser printer ; multi-function printer that can print, copy and scan ; and, a printer that can print, copy, scan and fax .

Senior officials of Samsung Printing Solutions told journalists that the C4XX series offered the world’s first NFC-supported colour laser printers and multi-function printers.

The NFC and Wi-Fi Direct facilitate wireless operation of the devices. The NFC technology allows any device within a 4 cm-radius to be connected to another device by tapping them together.

The Wi-Fi Direct technology enables the quick exchange of data between connected devices. In the new printer series, Samsung has combined the two technologies to facilitate quick wireless printing from smartphones.

The officials said these printers were aimed at small office users and home users.

Users can print pictures, documents and emails by tapping their smartphones on the printer. Scanning and faxing can be done by synchronising the contents on the smartphones with the printers. With Samsung Mobile Print App, users can print everything from PDF files to Excel spreadsheets to PowerPoint presentations directly from their smartphone.

But, those who do not have NFC-enabled smartphones or have not installed the Samsung Mobile Print App on to their phones can still benefit from the new printer series as is supports Google Cloud Print.

Owners of Galaxy phones and Galaxy tabs have the added advantage of being able to print images from gallery app, documents, email and web browser pages.

Samsung Printing Solutions Senior Vice-President David SW Song said India was a potentially huge market for the new series of printers.

The company would, after launching the series in the country, tap tier-II cities. He said that the new A3 copier series, targeted at small-scale units, will also be available in India in a couple of months.
