Mobile services provider Tata Teleservices (TTSL) has garnered a 40 per cent market share in the dongle space nationally, making it the largest player in the segment.
The Tata group company, which offers Internet access over its Photon range of dongles, intends to hold on to this share.
The company’s Photon Max WiFI dongle, launched in November 2013, is in great demand, said TTSL head (marketing) Gurinder Singh Sandhu.
“The product has been a huge success. We had only introduced it in the post-paid segment and by March we will have enough supply to offer to pre-paid customers too,” Sandhu said, adding, the top 10 cities in the country contributed mainly to the sales.
TTSL’s EV-DO network quality, with a 6.2 MBPS speeds and free national roaming were the reasons for the company garnering the leadership position, he said.
He, however, did not divulge the actual numbers of dongles the company has sold.
According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, India has about 150 million Internet users.
TTSL will also launch an advanced Photon Max WiFi product.
A standalone device, this does not need a USB slot. The new dongle works on battery power, and can wirelessly connect five devices simultaneously. Sandhu said the business potential of these devices is evident from the shifting pattern of data consumers to these devices.
