Tata Trusts is leveraging a new weather forecasting system developed by ClimaCell, a US-based start-up, in its rural uplift programmes. Tata Trusts is the company’s first Indian partner.
Ratan Tata had backed ClimaCell, in his personal capacity, in the initial stages to study micro-weather impact on the developing world.
“An important need of the Indian farmer is a weather forecast which is precise to his geography and accurate,” said R Venkataramanan, Managing Trustee of Tata Trusts.
ClimaCell is introducing this new technology to give location-specific, low-altitude micro-weather forecasts. Among 39 countries, the first phase of the company’s global rollout will see advanced weather data come to India.
‘Weather awareness’
“By leveraging a ‘big data’-centric approach to the issue, we can make a significant contribution to improving weather awareness across wide swaths of society. That includes providing weather data to parts of the world which have not typically had access to it including the developing world,”said Daniel Rothenberg, ClimaCell’s Chief Scientist.
Unexpected weather hits especially hard in countries where agriculture is the main source of income for the majority of the population.
Besides agriculture, ClimaCell’s offerings are applicable to aviation, automotive, shared mobility, UAVs, and utilities.
