COAI today said Vodafone India’s CEO and Managing Director Marten Pieters has been elected as the Chairman of the industry body for 2014—15.
Bharti Airtel’s CEO and Managing Director Managing Director (India and South Asia) Gopal Vittal has been elected as the Vice Chairman.
COAI, which represents six of the largest mobile service operators, said at its members elected Pieters as Chairman and Vittal as Vice Chairman at its Annual General Body Meeting, held today.
Pieters, who was serving at Vice Chairman of the industry body, takes over from the outgoing President and Managing Director of Idea Cellular Himanshu Kapania.
COAI also designated its Executive Council for the new term at the meeting, it added.
Pieters, who is heading Vodafone India since February 2009, has over three decades of experience in global and domestic markets and has served in senior positions in various organisations.
Vittal has over 25 years of experience in the telecom and consumer goods (FMCG) industries.
“After years of uncertainty and policy paralysis, we are expecting a definitive roadmap for the telecom sector from the new government in the Centre,” Pieters said.
In the recent past, India’s growth story fuelled by the telecom sector has been going through a challenging policy and regulatory environment, he added.
While the Industry is witnessing low profit margins, primarily due to high debt paid to finance 3G and BWA Auction held couple of years ago, the sector also underwent a series of unprecedented events and policy reversals, Pieters said.
