IT major Wipro on Wednesday said that it was in discussions with the West Bengal government for taking possession of the allotted land at Rajarhat in New Town – located in the northern fringes of Kolkata. The company plans to set up its second campus in the city on the 50-acre plot at Rajarhat.

Two 50-acre plots were allotted to Wipro and Infosys in Rajarhat in 2010 by the former Left Front government at Rs 1.5 crore an acre. Both the companies at present have a campus each in the IT hub – Sector V – in Salt Lake in West Bengal.

“There are certain infrastructure issues such as sewerage, water and electricity that need to sorted out first, after which we will take possession of the land,” Mr Suresh C. Senapathy, Executive Director and Chief Finance Officer, Wipro, said while speaking on the sidelines of a seminar organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

He added that the company was in the final stages of taking possession of the land at Rajarhat but refrained from revealing when construction of the second campus would begin.

According to Mr Senapathy, the company is looking forward to taking possession of a “functional piece of land” with all infrastructure issues being resolved within six months.

Around Rs 19 crore or 25 per cent out of a total of Rs 75 crore has already been paid by Wipro as its first instalment.

“Once we get possession of the land, rest of the amount will follow,” Mr Senapathy said.

Wipro currently operates full capacity at its existing Salt Lake campus and plans to make its new one at Rajarhat a ‘mix of both IT and BPO'.
