RBI Deputy Governor R Gandhi exhorted co-operative banks and regional rural banks to adopt technology, focus on corporate governance, and imbibe professionalism to face the challenges posed by the newer entrants — the small finance banks.

Addressing the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the National Institute for Rural Banking here on Friday, Gandhi said the co-operative banking sector in the country has not been able to utilise its full potential due to lack of professionalism, corporate governance and reluctance to adopt technology. Though there are a large number of co-operative banks, their share in the Indian banking sector is not more than 5 per cent, he added.
