The Tamil Nadu Government has announced a number of residential projects including layouts, apartments and slum redevelopment initiatives that will improve supply of housing for the lower and middle income groups.

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, in a statement in the Assembly, said a modern, residential layout of 222 acres would be established at Kadambur village near Maraimalai Nagar (about 35 km south of Chennai). Residential plots will be available for all income groups.

Under the slum-free cities programme, over 10,000 apartments will be built by the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board in Chennai and other cities at a cost of ₹825 crore.

The Central Government will provide 50 per cent of the project cost, the State 40 per cent and the beneficiaries 10 per cent. The apartments will be of 400 sq ft with fans and lights.

The Slum Clearance Board’s project in Nochikuppam with 534 apartments built in 1972 will be redeveloped as the buildings are now in a dilapidated state.

A multi-storeyed office complex will be built at a cost of ₹63 crore at Koyambedu on a one-acre property belonging to the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority. The building would house CMDA and other government offices, she said.

The Chief Minister also announced seven pedestrian subways to be built in the most congested areas in Chennai.

A two-floor office complex of about 1.11 lakh sq ft would be built above the Velachery MRTS station at a cost of ₹40 crore, she said. In Tiruchi, at Navalpattu near the junction of the Tiruchi-Pudukottai Highway, a 68.82-acre lay out will be created at a cost of ₹20 crore.

Over 1,360 plots would be on offer, including 690 plots for the economically weaker section, 475 for the middle income group and 195 for the high income group, Jayalalithaa said.
