The State Forest Research Institute has developed technology to strengthen the properties of bamboo for use as reinforcement material in construction. Sharing this information here on Friday, S Balaji, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Research and Extension), told Business Line that the technology developed by the Forest Engineering department is being improved upon in such a way that bamboo can be mixed either with steel or used as an exclusive reinforcement material in construction. To demonstrate it, the Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding constructed a bamboo structure within its campus to house the Bamboo Market Information Centre. Balaji hinted about the possibility of using bamboo in construction of bus shelters.
