Sales from the International Kolkata Book Fair, which had dropped in 2017 as a fallout of demonetisation, are likely to witness a rebound in 2018.
“In 2017 we had recorded sales of around ₹20 crore, down from ₹21 crore in 2016. This year we expect sales to be better as the impact of demonetisation has tapered off,” Tridib Chatterjee, General Secretary of the Publishers & Booksellers Guild told newspersons on the sidelines of a press conference to announce the inauguration of the book fair. The 42nd International Kolkata Book Fair, from January 31 to February 11, has shifted to a new fair ground at the Central Park Mela Complex in Salt Lake.
New venueThe change in venue could pose some ‘challenges’, particularly on the logistics front. However, its easy accessibility from most parts of the city will be an advantage.
Even while the fair ground is slightly smaller (around 12.5 acre), it is not likely to have an impact on footfalls, Chatterjee said. Nearly 22 lakh people had visited the fair last year. France will be the theme country for the book fair this year, which will host approximately 580 stalls.
