Amazon on Thursday, announced that it is ramping up the storage capacity of its Fulfilment Centre (FC) network by 5 million cubic feet across 5 new FCs, in preparation for the festive season later this year.

The new FCs will be set up in Bengaluru, Mumbai, Gurgaon, Vijayawada and Kolkata to support increased customer and seller demand from these regions and will be fully operational before the festive season of 2018.

Fulfilment centres

With this addition, Amazon.in now has 67 FCs in 13 States with a total storage capacity of over 20 million cubic feet, the largest fulfilment infrastructure for e-commerce in the country.

Of the 67 FCs, 15 are part of the specialised network for the large appliances and furniture category and another 15 are part of the specialised network to support the AmazonNow business, which is an app based, two-hour delivery service for daily essentials that is available in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi/NCR.

Amazon has the largest number of FCs in Maharashtra at 15, followed by Haryana and Karnataka at 12 and 9 respectively.

Prime deliveries

“With this expanded infrastructure, Prime orders will be faster than before and the number of Prime eligible items will increase, offering an even better Prime experience to our customers” Akhil Saxena, Vice President, Customer Fulfilment, Amazon India, told BusinessLine . Currently, Prime selection in India includes over 40 million of the 170 million items available on Amazon.in, that are available for immediate shipping through its network of FCs in India.

While Prime members in India get free one-day and two-day delivery for Prime eligible items, globally Amazon is striving to make Prime shipping faster and offers free Prime same-day and one-day delivery in more than 8,000 cities. Prime Now, ultra-fast delivery is available in over 50 cities worldwide across 9 countries.

‘I have space’

Amazon has expanded the scale of innovative delivery models like ‘I Have Space’ where it partners with local store owners across cities to deliver products to customers within a 2-4 km radius of their store and the ‘Service Partner Network’ program, where Amazon works with entrepreneurs from all backgrounds to reach customers in tier-III and IV locations with its own delivery services.

“I Have Space has grown from 12 stores in Bengaluru in 2014 to 17,500 stores that serve 225 cities. Our service partner network has grown from one partner in 2013 to 350 partners in 320 cities” said Saxena.

Amazon also operates 210 delivery stations to support last mile delivery.
