The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) today announced A Mohammed John, a minister in late J Jayalalithaa cabinet and N Chandrasekharan, Secretary of the Mettur city unit of the party, as its candidates to the Rajya Sabha elections from the State to be held on July 18.

The ruling party also announced AC Shanmugam, President of New Justice Party, as the alliance candidate for Vellore Lok Sabha constituency, which will got to polls on August 5. The election in this constituency was to be held along with other seats on April 18 but was rescinded after large amounts of unaccounted cash were seized from a warehouse allegedly belonging to the DMK candidate.

Both the announcements were made by AIADMK’s coordinator and Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and co-coordinator and Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami through a press release.

The tenure of sitting Rajya Sabha MPs from Tamil Nadu - V Maitrayen, R Lakshmanan, T Rathinavel, KR Arjunan (all three from the AIADMK), Kanimozhi (DMK), and D Raja (CPI) - gets over on July 24.

Based on its present strength in the State Assembly, the AIADMK can send three candidates to the Rajya Sabha. The party is sending two candidates and had promised one to the Pattali Makkal Katchi as part of a pre-poll alliance for the Lok Sabha election.

The DMK has nominated party trade union leader M Shanmugam and senior advocate P Wilson, and the third being allotted to MDMK as agreed upon earlier.
