Why exactly is Airbnb getting into travel planning? Journeys in its testing phase will be offering 3-5 day travel plans in San Francisco to select users, after which expectations are that it will roll out full fledged travel services.
Aloke Bajpai of Ixigo.com explains that it is a battle for customer acquisition. “In the travel business, the major spend is on customer acquisition. At the bottom end of the funnel are transactions. At the top end, which is where the customer comes in, is inspiration.” He said one needs to own both the top and bottom of the funnel to ensure the customer first comes to you and then stays.
