Reacting to TV coverage of actor Sridevi’s death, the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has written to Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani calling for a government advisory on reporting such instances.
It has suggested that the Minister should convene a meeting of media organisations and representatives of civil society to deliberate on this issue.
CAIT National President BC Bhartia and Secretary-General Praveen Khandelwal said that the manner in which the reporting of death of actor Sridevi was done by several TV channels has raised serious questions. They also took exception to some of the panel discussions on TV channels.
In a letter to the Minister, CAIT said: “...we feel the need of your intervention in this critical matter which is not restricted to actress Sridevi alone but as a fundamental matter of any civil society some kind of self-imposed code of conduct for media should exist or the Government may issue an advisory based on mutual consultation.”
