A team of scientists at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) here have developed a formula to treat keratitis, a major fungal eye infection.
``We have developed smart polymer-based biocompatible nano particles carrying a formulation that is designed to handle problems caused by fungal infection effectively,’’ Ch Mohan Rao, Director, CCMB, told newspersons here on Saturday.
Fungal keratitis is one of the major eye problems today, mostly noticed among farmers and sections of the population living in rural areas. If left untreated, it leads to loss of vision.
The CCMB is in the process of patenting its formula. ``Once this process is completed, we will seek the Government’s permission to conduct human trials and hope to bring the treatment to market in about three years,’’ the scientist said.
So far, the formula has been tested successfully on animals and is expected to give similar results in human trails as well.
In addition to eye disorders, it could be used as a platform technology to treat other ailments, including cancer, Mohan Rao added.
