Nearly 2.50 lakh new sales jobs can be created in Chennai provided ten major regulatory reforms, including consolidation of 44 central labour laws into four, are carried out, according to HR company TeamLease.

Without reforms, the city is expected to create at least 60,000 new sales jobs in next three years, according to Sudeep Kumar Sen, Assistant Vice President, TeamLease.

With an increasing retail store space of 1 million sq ft, the city’s retail sector will be the biggest driver of demand for sales talent. Other sectors like automobile, infrastructure and IT will push demand for sales talent, he told newspersons.

Overall, Chennai will see a 12 per cent growth in hiring outlook in coming fiscal, he said.

The other key reforms are having Unique Enterprise Number, employee salary choice, Factories Amendment Bill 2016, Small Factories Act, amendments in Contract Labour and Regulation Act 1970, amendment in Industrial Disputes Act, 1947, amendments in Trade Union Act, 1926 and adoption of the Model Shops and Establishment Act, he said.

Chennai currently has 1.21 lakh sales professionals across sectors. This amounts to 12 per cent of overall 1.5 million sales profiles across the country. However, with a combination of macro-economic, strategic and technological factors like GST, FDI, digitisation and artificial intelligence, the profile will witness a significant growth.

With sectors like automobile, retail and IT experiencing growth prospects, the ability of companies to take advantage of this opportunity will depend on their capability to sell more, sell better and sell faster. This, in turn will stimulate demand and make sales the ‘inevitable and most potent profile,’ he said.
