The World Health Organisation (WHO) has cautioned that the number of Covid-19 cases will likely touch the one crore mark within the next week.

Mike Ryan, executive director of the WHO’s emergency programme, said many countries in North, South, and Central America, are still struggling with unprecedented community transmission. He said the pandemic has not yet reached its peak in many countries in the Americas.

The number of new cases globally jumped by 1,33,326 on Tuesday, according to data from the WHO. More than a third of those cases came from Mexico, Chile, Peru, Brazil, and the US, which reported a combined total of 58,583 new cases in a single day.

The US remains the worst-hit country with more than 2.3 million cases and at least 1, 21,279 deaths.

“We expect to reach a total of 10 million cases within the next week. This is a sober reminder that even as we continue research into vaccines and therapeutics, we have an urgent responsibility to do everything we can with the tools we have now to suppress transmission and save lives,” WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said in a statement.
