A strong feeder connectivity along the Indian coasts has facilitated the DP World operated India Gateway Terminal at Vallarpadam to register a 19 per cent increase in volume in the first quarter of 2018.
The terminal also handled the highest monthly volume of more than 52,000 TEU (twenty foot equivalent unit) in March.
In the last fiscal year, the country’s first international transshipment gateway successfully handled a volume of more than 5.5 lakhs TEU.
Feeder connectivity
The terminal posted an increase in volumes due to its strong feeder connectivity as it is directly connected to ports at Mundra, Nhava Sheva, Goa, Mangalore, Visakhapatnam, Chennai, Kattupalli, Krishnapatnam, and Tuticorin. The exponential growth is due to the terminal’s constant endeavour of investing in technology and innovation, further enabling trade and facilitating ease of doing business.
Bharat Trade, which is a Port Community System (PCS) provides a single window to customers and paperless transactions to the trade.
The system has revolutionised container terminal operations at DP World and IGTPL is the first terminal in the country to successfully adopt it, said Jibu Kurien Itty, CEO, DP World Cochin.
‘High productivity’
“We have been able to strengthen our connectivity through adequate feeder links coupled with strong inter-modal rail connections and have further created an ecosystem valuable to our customers’ logistics supply chain,” he said. DP World Cochin serves as a natural gateway to the vast industrial and agricultural produce markets of the South and West India.
The terminal in the last two years has consistently maintained a high productivity level of gross crane rate (GCR) of 31+ moves per hour and a truck turnaround time of 27 minutes, which is considered to be amongst the best international maritime standards.
Improved road and rail connectivity have substantially reduced the transit time and logistics costs for the trade, making IGTPL a preferred gateway for exports and imports from/to the hinterland.
The terminal is directly connected to crucial ports of Australia, Far East, South East Asia and Middle East through direct services.
