Drunken Monkey is planning an expansion of its smoothie bar chain from 50 outlets in 12 cities to 150 by 2019.

The Hyderabad-based start-up is also gearing to increase its headcount from 500 to 1,000 by the year-end.

Since its first smoothie bar in Hyderabad in 2016, Drunken Monkey has grown to a chain of 50 stores from small kiosks to bigger quick-service cafe-style outlets.

With a tagline “Naturally High”, Drunken Monkey is presenting its outlet as a social destination.

Founded by Samrat Reddy, a serial entrepreneur, the focus is on popularising the ‘Smoothie Culture’ in tier I and II cities.

As a man behind most of Drunken Monkey’s signature smoothie recipes, Samrat says, “Drunken Monkey’s story began with the need to find an alternative to the café culture. I wanted to do to smoothies what Starbucks did to coffee. The new generation, the millennials, wants to be catered to and are more willing than ever to experiment with new brands. People want a space to create meaningful social connections without restricting themselves to the regular coffee and chai outlets. Smoothies are the new social lubricant in town!”

The ‘Monkey’ delivers blended fresh-fruit smoothies and juices in over 170 combinations, ranging from all-natural fresh fruit shakes to decadently indulgent smoothies, from detox to meal smoothies, and also a range to cure hangovers.

The company is currently self-funded and may explore fresh investments once it achieves a target of 150 bars.
