IIT-Madras duo wins regional round of BL quiz

This footwear brand was born when the Indian exporter, Aero Group, bought its erstwhile customer, a bankrupt Quebec-based company, in the late 1980s.

However, in those pre-liberalisation days, Aero Group chose to export the products to European countries including Russia. What is the name of the brand which started selling in India post liberalisation? Answer: Woodland.

What was the term coined by professor of economics Ibrahim Oweiss in the 1970s which describes the large amounts of money earned by oil production in OPEC (Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) countries? Answer: Petrodollars.

These were some of the questions Prateek Vijayavargia and Kavin Aadithiyan of IIT-Madras answered effortlessly to win the Regional Finals of the ‘Cerebration’ – Business Line Corporate Quiz 2014, today.

20 teams

Of the 20 teams that participated, six were chosen for the final round of the annual quiz competition held in Chennai.

An Infosys team (Vivek Venkatesan and Senthil Kumar PK), with 20 points, emerged runner-ups after a tie-breaker question to beat another team from Infosys.

The corporate quiz, conducted by quiz master Lloyd Saldanha, witnessed good participation from companies and educational institutions, including Infosys (with three teams), Cognizant, IIT-Madras and Caterpillar.

8 cities

This year, the Business Line Quiz will be conducted in eight cities – Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Kolkata.

The title sponsor for the event is Union Bank of India and associate sponsors are SAIL, Hudco and MTNL. Gift sponsors are Lawrence & Mayo and Vimal.

Eight teams will fight to win the big prize of ₹1.5 lakh at the Grand Finale to be held in Mumbai on March 30.
