A meeting of Vice-Chancellors of State universities here has decided to set up a Chancellor’s Council for discussing issues in the higher education sector and problems common to all universities.

The council will have as members the Education Minister, all Vice-Chancellors and a couple of key officials. The council will be called frequently and reports on the performance of the universities will be presented to the Governor, who is the Chancellor of all universities, every three months.

Corporate linkages

The council, to be set up at the initiative of Governor P Sathasivam, will encourage universities to establish linkages with the corporate world.

It was decided that the council would promote signing of MoUs with corporate houses for establishing linkages. It will also encourage collaborations with international organisations of repute.

The meeting was held against the backdrop of increasing unrest and agitations at the universities, all-round fall in the academic standards, and frequent delays in holding examinations and announcement of results.

Academic timetable

A major decision at today’s meeting related to the academic timetable. The timetable with a definite schedule for admission, examination, and release of results from the year 2015-16 will be published. The timetable should be strictly adhered to and any deviation from the schedule will be monitored by the Chancellor, who will make “necessary interventions,” a press release from the Raj Bhavan said.

There will be a Chancellor’s award for the best performing university.
