Phone tapping issue

Meanwhile, on the issue of phone tapping of suspected tax evaders, the outgoing CBDT Chairman, Mr Sudhir Chandra, said the power of interception and tapping stays with the Income-Tax Department. “The power of interception and tapping stays with CBDT. There remains no difference.

“Circumstances still remain the same. We have the tapping power since 2006 and we will continue to have so.

“This settles the matter between the Home Ministry and Finance Ministry. Home Ministry wanted us to have some standard operating procedure.

“Those procedures already exist,” Mr Sudhir Chandra said.
