The Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) has sanctioned an additional seven lakh posts for teachers in the last three years, Minister of State for HRD Shashi Tharoor informed the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. The Ministry is fighting against time to implement Right to Education by the deadline of March 31 this year.

Tharoor told the Lower House that these posts have been approved to maintain the desired pupil-teacher ratio under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, which is the primary vehicle for delivering RTE.

He added that only individuals who clear the Teacher Eligibility Test will be eligible for appointment as teachers.
