Students may soon be able to select engineering institutes best suited to their stream of choice based on a global ranking system.

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) are bracing for a ranking system which will benchmark them against engineering institutes worldwide, and also rate them on the basis of their performance on various parameters.

“The move will help students identify institutes that have the best resources for specific courses, especially in niche areas,” said Narayanan Ramaswamy, Partner, Education Practice, KPMG. For instance, if a student is keen to pursue bio-sciences, the ranking will help him/her identify the IIT that has the best lab facilities and faculty for the course.

The parameters on which the assessment of the institutes will be done include the courses they offer, proficiency of faculty, lab and research facilities, placements and constitution of batches, among others.

The ranking system will be based on comprehensive data collected from IITs by independent agencies. The move comes in the backdrop of a widespread demand that Indian educational institutes need to make a mark in the global education scenario.

According to the officials of the Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry, IITs are required to adhere to various parameters that are a key consideration in global education rankings such as QS World University Ranking, Shanghai (Academic Ranking of World Universities) and Times University Ranking.

Apart from the parameters mentioned earlier, other metrics include the quality of teaching environment, feedback from recruiters, the number of international students and international visiting researchers, and the number of courses with international participation. The ranking system gives high weightage to the global character of an institute.

Industry experts point out that initially IITs may have lower rankings at the global level, but the move to have a ranking system will improve their overall standards and gradually help them scale up in the global ranking matrix.
