Diwali is that time of the year when people drop everything and rush back home to celebrate the festival with their families.

Of late, however, the festival is turning to be an apt time for many families for weekend getaways. Keeping this in mind, many travel agencies have come up with lucrative offers to cash in on the trend of ‘Destination Diwali’.

One reason for this trend catching up is that more and more working people, mainly youth, stay far away from their families. For them, planning a short vacation to nearby places is one way of celebrating Diwali.

“As per our recent festive survey, 73 per cent of travellers are looking for a quick getaway during Diwali. A similar trend is reflected in our bookings during the season so far across various lines of businesses. Travellers are looking to explore destinations closer to their current city, seeking a short break instead of going home,” Sharat Dhall, COO (B2C), Yatra.com, said.

He added that with the increase in the number of flights on key routes and the number of aircraft going up, the prices of tickets during the festival season this year are comparatively cheaper. The domestic air market is also up by 18 per cent from last year.

However, fares are high in case one books the tickets at the last minute.

Destinations Several travel companies are providing discounts on holidays packages. Travkart, a unit of Holidays by Sahibji, has come up with a super sale campaign, under which travellers going for national as well international destinations will get a chance to win various gifts.

When it comes to choosing destinations, a majority of travellers prefer places that are affordable within the country. According to a survey, only 22.7 per cent of the respondents said they were opting for a vacation outside India.
