Hyderabad, Sept 14 There is a need to increase the funding for eye care programmes in India and other countries, according to Peter Holland, Chief Executive, International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness Council (IAPB).
Speaking to newspersons here on Friday, Holland said there were many in the world who were facing vision-related issues which could be addressed by allocating more funds. About one billion people are suffering from poor vision in the world and more cataract surgeries and use of spectacles can give good vision to many of them.
There is also a need for an integrated approach to eye care in India by effectively utilising schemes such as national health insurance scheme and eye-screening initiatives being taken up in Telangana, he added.
IAPB, an international alliance of eye care organisations, corporates and hospitals, is conducting its annual general meeting here at the L.V. Prasad Eye Institute on September 15 & 16, 2018.
Over 400 delegates will attend the meeting to celebrate the progress that has been made in India and across the South East Asia Region. The council will also discuss the challenges that eye health faces, not just in the region, but across the world.
