The Income Tax Department is planning to set up a dedicated team in each district to curb the use of money power during the forthcoming assembly elections in Karnataka.
In an informal chat with media persons on the sidelines of the inauguration of the office of the Additional Commissioner of Income Tax, Central Range, Mangaluru, on Friday, BR Balakrishnan, Director General of Income Tax (Investigation), Karnataka and Goa, said the department would have a dedicated team in each district. The Deputy Directors of Income Tax, who will be part of these teams, will have statutory powers such as entering premises and searching.
The department will set up dedicated teams so that people can pass on information to it. The only flip side is that some political parties use it against their political opponents sometimes by giving false information. He said the department will have to be alert to that also.
Balakrishnan said the department did a similar exercise during Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, and seized more than ₹40 crore of cash.
