Bharti Airtel has launched its first pilot to test a public wi-fi project. The pilot launched in the IT hub of Hyderabad offers 750 mb of free data per day per user. Covered by 17 hotspots set up in the Hi-Tec City area, the wi-fi will be provided using the company’s fiber network.
“We are going to test the pilot for three months and will come out with a plan based on the feedback,” Venkatesh Vijayraghavan, Chief Executive Officer of Bharti Airtel (AP and Telangana), has said.
Addressing a press conference here on Friday, he said the company expected about 40,000 commuters, commercial establishments and visitors to use the facility in the 8-km stretch in the area, which houses major national and multi-national IT and BPO companies.
Users will get a one-time password after selecting the Airtel’s wifi network by furnishing their mobile numbers. The company claims a speed of 4 mbps to 42 mbps, depending on the network usage.
Telangana IT Minister K Taraka Rama Rao has said that the government planned to cover the whole of Hyderabad, covering an area of 700 sq km, with public wi-fi. “We have called for expression of interest from other telecom players in this regard,” the Minister said.
The Minister said the Government was trying not to spend public money on this project, while encouraging the telecom players to provide wi-fi services.
