The BJP has snatched from the Congress the only civic body it controlled in Gujarat, at Junagadh, whose election results were announced on Tuesday.
Out of 60 seats, the BJP won 41 while the Congress had to make do with 16. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) won two seats while one went to an Independent candidate. Elections to the municipal body had been held on Sunday.
The Junagadh Municipal Corporation, with 51 seats, came into existence in 2003. In the 2004 polls, the BJP gained control. However, the Congress, winning 26 seats, defeated the BJP, which won 21, in the 2009 polls. The BSP and Independents had won three and one seat, respectively.
Following the BJP’s landslide victory in the May Lok Sabha polls, nine Congress councillors, including the Deputy Mayor, had switched their allegiance to the BJP in Junagadh. The BJP continued its winning spree in the by-elections held simultaneously for 10 seats in other parts of Gujarat, of which the ruling party won nine.
