Celebrated theatre and film personality, Amol Palekar, along with other prominent citizens, have approached the Bombay High Court after several lakh voters were unable to vote as their names were not on the voters list.
High-profile votersIn Mumbai alone, the “missing voters” included entire residential societies, and several high-profile voters, including HDFC Chairman Deepak Parekh, whose entire family could not vote for the same reason.
Palekar and his wife Sandhya Gokhale who could not vote and other prominent citizens, including retired IAS officer and political aspirant, Arun Bhatia, took the issue to court.
Bhatia is contesting on a People’s Guardian Party ticket.
The petitioners have also been joined by two other non-governmental organisations from Mumbai — Action for Good Governance and Networking in India (AGNI) and Birthright.
The Bombay High Court has taken up all these public interest litigations together, and after three consecutive hearings, the HC is expected to give its order this week.
The “missing voter” experience was witnessed in districts such as Nagpur and Pune also. The number of missing voters in Mumbai and Pune has been estimated at a few lakhs.
