The Kerala Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) will not be associated with the Grand Kerala Shopping Festival (GKSF) this year.
The decision was taken at the board meeting of the Chamber in protest against the ‘anti-trade and industry attitude’ of the State government.
Chamber Chairman Mathew Kuruvithadam alleged in a statement issued here that the unscientific tax reforms in the State have affected several sectors, including textile and jewellery.
As the State government is passing through a financial crisis, it would be ideal to desist from organising mega events like GKSF, he said.
According to him, the two per cent turnover tax in the textile sector and the five per cent tax imposed on gold jewellery would hit these sectors hard. Also, the licensing formalities introduced by local bodies are anti-trade and would not promote business, he added.
