The Telangana Government has appealed to the Union Government not to reduce the rice mill levy from 75 per cent to 25 per cent. Chief Minister K Chandrasekhara Rao has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting him to take up the issue with the Department of Food and Public Distribution.
The levy mandates the rice millers to sell a fixed quantity of the rice they process to the Food Corporation of India (FCI) or to State agencies at the minimum support price (MSP). They can sell the remaining commodity in the open market. The idea is to protect the farmers from the market vagaries.
“We have been told that the department has decided to reduce the levy from the 2014-14 kharif marketing season itself. If it is not to retain the earlier levels, please ensure that the levy is put at 50 per cent,” the Chief Minister pointed out.
