The Korean Trade Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) will visit the upcoming hardware cluster at Naihati.

Dong Seok Choi, Chief Director-General of KOTRA, is likely to be there later in the day. KOTRA on its part will inform the Korean companies about the upcoming hardware cluster that can be leveraged to promote electronic systems design and manufacturing (ESDM).

Good BCIM connectivity

According to Choi, West Bengal is strategically located as a gateway to Bangladesh, Myanmar and China. It can be leveraged as an export hub to these countries. This apart, quality talent available in the region is also an added advantage, he said.

“West Bengal is strategically located and there is good BCIM (Bangladesh, China, India and Myanmar) connectivity. If developed, Kolkata can act as a supply hub with good foreign link,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the ICC ESDM Conclave.

Manufacturing hubs

Earlier in the day, West Bengal Finance, IT, Commerce and Industry Minister, Amit Mitra, had urged KOTRA to explore the possibility of setting up manufacturing hubs in one of the State-promoted industrial parks.

He had offered KOTRA a choice between Kharagpur (West Midnapore), Goaltore (West Midnapore) and Panagarh (Burdwan).

R&D facilities

This apart, Mitra had said that KOTRA could also explore the possibility of having R&D facilities for Korean companies or even leveraging the upcoming hardware or IT parks of the State.

KOTRA has so far signed an MoU with the Rajasthan State Government for setting up a manufacturing hub there. It might explore the possibility of a second facility in the future.
