The inaugural Wipro Chennai Marathon will kick off on December 2 with over 6,000 runners expected to participate in the event.

Powered by Chennai Runners, the marathon has attracted over 6,000 entries. United Way Chennai – the charity partners – has contributed around 2,000 of these registrations. Over ten companies, including Wipro Technologies, in Chennai have registered as groups, says a press release.

The marathon will see over Rs 1.6 lakh given away in cash prize money across two categories.

The three winners of the full marathon (42 km) will get Rs 25,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively. The winners of the half marathon will win Rs 20,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000.

Wipro will also sponsor the participation of the winner of the full marathon (in both male and female categories) for The Wipro San Francisco Marathon to be held on June 16, in San Francisco.

While Wipro is the title sponsor for the marathon, the other sponsors include Apollo Hospitals, Westin, Chennai Super Kings, Body Fuelz, Gautam Offset and Radio One, the release said.

According to Ram Viswanathan, founder, Chennai Runners, for the first time the marathon will use Radio Frequency Identification-based timing technology to provide official and personal times. This will bring the Wipro Chennai Marathon on par with marathons held globally.

The full marathon and half marathon participants will wind their way through the heart of Chennai, in a route spanning from IIT Madras, SP Road, Thiru Vi Ka Bridge, Durga Bhai Deshmukh Road, DGS Dinakaran Road, Santhome High Road, Light House, Kamarajar Road and Napier Bridge.

The runners will turn right to INS Adyar and back to IIT Madras, covering a total distance of 42 km.

Around 5,000 participants will run the 10 km race inside the IIT Madras, Viswanathan, an avid runner himself, told newspersons.
