The power situation in Andhra Pradesh is improving with the recent steps taken by the State Government, according to K Vijayanand, Managing Director of AP Genco (generation corporation) and also the in-charge CMD of AP Transco (transmission corporation). Vijayanand on Thursday said steps such as making arrangements to improve coal supply to thermal stations have helped.

He briefed the media after reviewing the power situation with the Andhra Pradesh Eastern Power Distribution Company Ltd (APEPDCL) officials.

The APEPDCL covers the five coastal districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari and West Godavari.

He said 4 lakh tonnes of coal was being imported, and a deal had been signed with Western Coal Fields for 4 lakh tonnes more and with Mahanadi Coal Fields for 2 lakh tonnes of coal.

“By the end of the month, we will have surplus coal stocks at all thermal stations for 15 days,” he said.

“We have drawn up an action plan to complete all sub-stations that were sanctioned within the next 8 to 10 months,” he said.

New projects

In the kv category, work is to be started on three sub-stations, one each in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and West Godavari. In the 220 kv category, work is in progress in one sub-station in Vizianagaram. While one each is to be started in Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam and East Godavari, two are in the proposal state for West Godavari.

In the 132 kv category, work is in progress in five sub-stations: one in Srikakulam, three in Visakhapatnam and one in West Godavari. Work 10 sub-stations will begin soon and 18 sub-stations are in the proposal stage.

On 24-hour supply to domestic and industry and nine-hour free supply to agriculture sector, as promised by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, he said plans were being drawn up and the issue was being discussed with a committee from the Central Government. APEPDCL CMD MV Seshagiri Babu said ₹1,000 crores was due from the government as subsidy and the issue was being addressed.
