The Kerala's worsening power situation has aggravated further with non-availability of power from outside sources and from the thermal power supplier within the State. BSES near here has stopped generation for want of fuel.

Water levels in dams as on Friday was sufficient only for 25 days of hydel generation at the current rate of 13.99 million units daily, senior KSEB sources told Business Line .

They said that with the available water storage only 8 million units can be generated for 43 days, i.e., till the first week of June when the southwest monsoon normally sets in over Kerala.

Supply from the Central grid has been restored only partially so far and the average power received this month was at 22.53 million units.

From NTPCs Kayamkulam plant 7.82 mus are being purchased while 2.5 mus are generated from the KSEB’s own thermal units at Brahmapuram near here and Kozhikode, the sources said.

When contacted, refinery sources told Business Line that no demand for naphtha has been received from BSES for supply this month.

The refinery supplies naphtha to the NTPC Kayamkulam plant and the FACT and balance available is exported as the naphtha storage facility at the refinery is limited.

Transmission lines

Power is available from Gujarat but the transmission lines for bringing it are yet to be commissioned, the officials said. Quoting Power Grid Corporation sources, they said it was scheduled to be ready by after mid-2014, but is now it being delayed by six months.

The daily demand for power stood at 60.4 mus last week while the average this month was at 59.7 mus daily.

If the current supply constraints prevailed, the duration of power cut may have to be extended further. Additional supply from the Central grid is unlikely.

“When a request for 100 MW of additional power supply was made, the Central officials said Kerala was having the minimum power cut when compared with other States. In Andhra Pradesh, power supply in rural areas is for only six hours, and in urban areas it is for 14 hours, while in Tamil Nadu no supply for 8 hours in rural areas and in all cities except Chennai, the cut is for four hours. In Delhi, it is for two hours,” they said.
