The highway on Shirady Ghat between Mangalore and Bangalore will be repaired after the monsoon, said Ramanath Rai, Karnataka Forest Minister and minister in-charge of Dakshina Kannada district.
Chairing a meeting to review various development projects of the district on Saturday, he said that the permanent works, including concreting of 13 km of the road in Shirady Ghat stretch, will be carried out after the monsoon season.
The total project cost of all the works on the stretch is estimated at ₹151.18 crore. Of this, the Central Road Transport Department has sanctioned works to the tune of ₹95.54 crore. The works under this phase include concreting of a 13-km stretch of the road and asphalting of another 21-km stretch of the road on Shirady Ghat section.
The meeting was informed that the Shirady Ghat section of the road will be closed for vehicular traffic during the repair period from October. For this, the Minister instructed the officials concerned to make alternative arrangements for the movement of vehicular traffic during the repair works.
The meeting was informed that 289 acres of land is required for extending the length of runway from 8000 ft to 13000 ft. The Central Government has been asked to look into this matter.
The Deputy Commissioner of the district, AB Ibrahim, said that the State Government has released ₹2.5 crore for acquiring a private building in the vicinity of the terminal building.
On the tardy progress in the completion of work on the exit road from the airport, he asked the agency concerned to speed up the work.
