Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan has promised to start crisis centres in Central as well as all State government hospitals to give support to victims of sexual abuse and would issue an advisory on it soon.

With the government hospitals being blamed for “insensitivity” while dealing with victims of rape and sexual abuse, these crisis centres are being envisaged to put into effect a strong protocol for hospitals and doctors.

Vardhan said hospital authorities would be given special training on how to deal with victims of abuse. He said certain punitive clauses would be introduced to discipline the hospital staff disobeying protocol.

Vardhan was inaugurating a ‘One stop crisis centre (OSCC)’ under Jai Prakash Hospital in Bhopal, which would provide support, care, treatment, security and legal advice to victims. This model will be replicated across the country, Vardhan said.

The single-window service has been set up as part of the Madhya Pradesh Government’s ‘Gauravi’ Mahila Samman Evang Sangrakshan Abhiyaan in partnership with two NGOs for training of doctors, counsellors and other personnel, a statement by the Ministry of Health said.
