Industrial and commercial establishments in Tamil Nadu will face a power shortage again as the utility has decided to impose power cuts to deal with a possible shortage.
According to an official communication, the order takes effect from today with the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation imposing a 90 per cent power cut during peak hours for high tension industrial and commercial power users.
This peak hour restriction will mean that they are permitted to use only 10 per cent of the demand and energy quota between 1800 hours and 2200 hours.
During non peak hours, the utility will impose a 20 per cent power cut from today for high tension industrial and commercial power users.
According to reliable sources who did not want to be quoted, the tangedco is taking the restriction and control measure to tackle a possible power shortage as the wind season tapers off and contribution from wind mills starts fluctuating. The utility is cutting down as a matter of abundant caution.
The restriction and control in power supply is being re-imposed within three months of the State Government lifting it from June 1. Industrial and commercial establishments in the State were subject to power shortage for five years from 2008. The demand-supply gap was estimated at about 30 per cent on a demand for about 12,000 MW.
Tamil Nadu has over 7,500 MW of wind generation capacity set up by private players.
