Indicating at a likely shake-up in the Gujarat Congress, the newly-elected Party President Rahul Gandhi stated that an action will be taken against those leaders who worked against the party in the Gujarat polls causing a dent in the party's prospects of a victory.

At a meeting with Congress workers and State party leaders in Ahmedabad on Saturday, Rahul stated there was a feeling among workers that some leaders didn't help the party (for victory). "The Congress party will take action against such people, irrespective of their stature or post. If you don't stand with the party in polls, you are not accepted in the party," Rahul said addressing the gathering here.

Congress won 77 seats, up 16 from its 2012 tally of 61, after a high-decibel campaigning by Rahul over the three months before the elections.

The Congress scion emphasized that the party has gained strength during the Gujarat elections. "Three four months ago the question here was whether Congress could fight the elections or not. The BJP said Congress would win 20-25 and 150+ for themselves. But the Gujarat Congressmen have shown that if they unite and fight on their ideology, they do not lose."

On his first visit to a state as a party president, Rahul congratulated the newly elected young leaders and the workers for what he called 'moral victory'.

"We lost the elections but we have won. This is the reality. We won because they fought with anger, with money, police, chief ministers from various states, industrialists. We had only truth. We stood against this and showed it to entire country that Congress can fight and win...We have broken the development talk of Modi ji. Now he cannot talk of it," he said adding that the new leadership will take the baton forward and form the government after five years.

"This time in Assembly a new leadership has taken shape. This leadership would form the government in the next elections. I can tell you that Congress will win 135 seats in next elections. If Gujarat congress accepts the thought that they can win, they will win. Till now 70 per cent of you believed it but not 100 per cent," he said.

"You are our ambassadors. People of Gujarat are looking towards you. You have to show that Congress legislators fight for people, their issues and do not take a step back," Rahul said setting the agenda for the role of opposition in the State assembly.

Earlier in the day, Rahul visited Somnath temple in Saurashtra and performed pooja and abhishek .
