Vexed with longish house numbers with several numbers punctuated by hyphens and oblique strokes? Miss a number or a stroke, you get nowhere. How about a smart number, unique with only eight digits and alphabets that make no mistake?

Just key in the number of the address on your smart phone to get a map and directions. Why, it can even indicate traffic bottlenecks. Residents of Hyderabad, and Vijayawada are going to have smart numbers for their houses, businesses and other important buildings.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), with over 15 lakh houses and businesses, has allotted ₹5 crore for the smart address system. It will be easy for the corporation and government agencies to get to the addresses. “The smart number has multiple benefits. It will change the way a civic body addresses problems in localities,” Aditya Vuchi, founder and CEO of Zippr, told BusinessLine .

“Law enforcing agencies, commercial establishments and other stakeholders can instantaneously get the exact location on GoogleMaps,” Aditya, whose start-up has built an engine that assigns numbers to users which in turn ‘pin’ their location on GoogleMaps, said. These smart addresses would come as a layer over the existing numbers and will not wipe out the old addresses. The start-up recently completed a pilot for GHMC.

The tech engine can randomly assign the numbers for free. But, it allows organisations, businesses and individuals to buy premium numbers that can reflect their specific identities. The start-up tied up with emergency service 108 to help out accident victims. It raised ₹6 crore from Indian Angel Network (IAN) a few months ago.

Zippr has done a similar initiative in Vijayawada as part of the campaign by the Vijaywada Municipal Corporation. “We have done the pilot for the smart address system,” Aditya said.
