Simultaneous elections and criminalising instant triple talaq is set to become the political subtext of debates during the Budget session with both the Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well as the President Ram Nath Kovind stressing on the passage of the proposed law on instant triple talaq on Monday.

The floor leaders of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) met in Parliament on the opening day of the Budget session. The PM received a standing ovation at the NDA meeting for his address at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The NDA passed a resolution congradulating the modi regime for inviting ten leaders of ASEAN at chief guests on the Republic Day and contributing to the “acknowledgement of India’s growing strategic profile in the world”.

At this meeting, the PM reportedly asked his allies to initiate discussions on the issue of simultaneous polls. With the subject finding mention in the Presidential address and the BJP actively encouraging public engagement and conversation on “one-nation-one-election”, this has contributed to speculations about the next general elections being brought forward.

The PM, also focused on instant triple talaq The PM said he hoped there “won’t be any politics” on the issue of triple talaq.

In another meeting of the BJP parliamentary executive, the PM asked party MPs for a “all hands on the deck” approach and said treasury benches should have high attendance when the House is in session.
