The verbal war between the BJP and Opposition parties took a turn for the worse on Monday with BSP supremo Mayawati commenting on the “failed marriage” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attack him and the BJP. The BJP retorted that the Grand Alliance’s leader has no moral right to continue in public life.

In a statement issued on Sunday, she said women cannot expect respect from someone who has abandoned his wife. “Women in the BJP get nervous when their husbands go near Modi. They fear that their husbands may abandon them,” the BSP supremo said. She also alleged that Modi abandoned his wife for political gains. “How can mothers and sisters of this country expect justice for him?” she added.

What has irked Mayawati was statements from the PM that she remained silent on the gang rape of a Dalit woman in Alwar. He challenged her to question the Ashok Gehlot government’s “inaction” on the matter.

“He wanted to benefit by it in the election season which is shameful,” she said. “Why did he not seek the resignation of the Chief Ministers in the BJP-ruled States when Dalits were attacked?” she asked.

“Under such circumstances, I request all the women of the country not to vote for such a person. This would also be their real respect to the deserted wife of Modiji,” Mayawati added.

BJP leaders hit back

The BJP fielded Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to target Mayawati. “Behan Mayawati - She is firm on becoming a Prime Minister. Her governance, ethics and discourse stoops to an all-time low. Her personal attack today on the Prime Minister exposes her as unfit for public life,” Jaitley tweeted.

Terming the comments shocking, Sitharaman said Mayawati has understood that her Grand Alliance is getting nowhere and that was the reason for her insecurity and worries. “It is absolutely disappointing and shocking that Mayawati has spoken so ill about PM, his personal life and women in the BJP. Mayawati, please be assured we are all absolutely safe, secure and have good professional relationships in our party,” she added.

She added that Mayawati demeaned her own stature by such remarks. “By her comments on PM, his personal life and women in the BJP, who are absolutely safe, Mayawati has only demeaned the stature of her own leadership and the positions she has held. It only shows that she has no respect left for any position or institution,” Sitharaman told reporters at a press conference.
