Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said the Narendra Modi government appears to be putting pressure on the Election Commission to defer the announcement of Gujarat elections, which should have happened along with Himachal Pradesh.
Surjewala alleged that the the move was intended to suit the ruling party’s political ends. He said the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposed Gujarat visit on October 16 was to announce sops and jhumlas that his party didn’t implement for the 22 consecutive years it has been in power.
“The onus lies on the Election Commission to ensure a level-playing field by announcing Gujarat election dates and imposing Code of Conduct immediately,” Surjewala said.
Speaking to BusinessLine , BJP General Secretary Bhupender Yadav denied the Congress’ charges and said there was no question of his party putting pressure on the EC
