The Karnataka government, in association with Mangalore University, has started a certificate course for tourist guides.
Speaking at the inauguration of the four-month tourist guide training programme at Mangalore University on Wednesday, Mustiary Begum, coordinator of the course, said that the Department of MBA (Tourism Administration) of the university and the Karnataka Tourism Department have started this course to equip participants with adequate skills as tourist guides.
Course contentIt will be a mixture of classroom and practical learning. Of the four months, one month will be earmarked for practical training at different tourist destinations.
The training will impart knowledge and information pertaining to various aspects of tourism industry with special reference to Karnataka in general and the coastal region of the State in particular, she said.
At the end of the training programme, successful candidates will get licences as tourist guides from the Karnataka Tourism Department.
The resource persons for the course are drawn from the university, colleges, Tourism Department and civil society groups with expertise in the area of tourism, she said.
Inaugurating the training programme, K Byrappa, Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University, said that good language and communication skills, honesty and commitments are important for tourist guides.
