Our Bureau Prime Minister Narendra Modi slammed Karnataka’s ruling Congress on Tuesday, accusing it of having developed, not the ease of the doing business, but that ‘of committing murder’.

Addressing a rally of the BJP in Udupi on Tuesday, Modi said that while his government was working to ensure a better business environment, the Congress believes in ‘ease of doing murder’.

Modi was referring to the killing of nearly two dozen BJP workers in the State in the last two years. He also asked the Congress to answer for the increase in incidence of crime, adding that there was no scope for development until the ‘politics of murder’ ends.

‘Why insult Gowda?’

Referring to the recent attack on the Karnataka Lokayukta in Bengaluru and a senior police officer’s letter to the Chief Secretary on working conditions, the BJP leader said intolerance, violence, and rapes were the identities of the Congress.

Modi said Congress leaders had disrespected JD(S) leader and former prime minister HD Deve Gowda. While there will be differences of opinions among politicians, one should not be disrespected for this.

Terming Udupi as the land of temples and of banking, Modi said the Congress had nationalised banks in the name of poor. However, the poor could not get access to banks even after that.

He said the BJP government took the initiative to provide banking facilities to the poor through Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. Over 31 crore bank accounts were opened under this with total deposits of around ₹80,000 crore, he said.

The Congress did not use the money in banks to empower youth. It was the BJP government, Modi claimed, which began disbursing money to youth through the Prime Minister’s Mudra Yojna. Mudra beneficiaries are becoming entrepreneurs now, he said.
