The Election Commission has ordered a probe after a BJP office-bearer tweeted the schedule of the Karnataka elections before it was officially announced.

Amit Malviya, the head of the BJP’s IT cell had tweeted that the Karnataka polls would be held on May 12, and counting would take place on May 18. The actual dates are May 12 and May 18, respectively.

Malviya defended himself saying the source of his information was a leading English news channel.

The Congress then hit out at the BJP and the EC, with its communications in-charge Randeep Surjewala saying the Election Commission’s “credibility was at test”, and asked if there would be any action against the ruling party and its chief Amit Shah.

“BJP becomes the ‘Super Election Commission’ as they announce poll dates for Karnataka even before the EC...Credibility of EC is on test. (sic)”

“Will EC now issue notice to BJP President, Amit Shah & register an FIR against BJP IT Head for leaking EC’s confidential information?” Surjewala said on Twitter.

“I am also attaching a similar tweet by social media in charge of the Congress in Karnataka,” Malviya said in his communication adding that it would seem that the Congress leader also used the same source to post the information that the BJP IT head had done.

“As is evident the final dates announced by the Election Commission were different from what the channel reported that was the source of information in my tweet,” Malviya said.
