The Election Commission has rejected a petition against the UPA’s candidate for the Presidential election, Mr Pranab Mukherjee. The NDA-backed candidate, Mr P.A. Sangma’s campaign co-ordinators had approached the Commission saying Mr Mukherjee was holding three offices of profit when he submitted nomination papers. Mr Sangma’s lawyer, Mr Satpal Jain, said the Election Commission had not looked into the merits of the case. He said the Commission told them that the issue will not come under their jurisdiction. “The officials told us that only the Supreme Court can take a view on the issue,” Mr Jain said.
The parties backing Mr Sangma will meet here on Thursday. Sources indicated that they may move the Supreme Court against acceptance of Mr Mukherjee’s nomination papers. Meanwhile, talking to reporters here, Mr Mukherjee refused to react. He said everybody had their own perception. “They go according to that,” he said, and added that he was optimistic about his victory in the election on July 19.
