The Election Commission (EC) hopes to decide on Friday whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement that India had successfully tested an anti-satellite missile was a violation of the Model Code of Conduct .

“We hope to complete it soon… may be by tomorrow,” Sandeep Saxena, Deputy Election Commissioner, said at a press conference here on Thursday.

He added that the EC will have to examine whether there was a violation of the code, (the issue of) law and media. Officials said neither the Prime Minister nor his office approached the EC for permission to address the nation nor was the EC given any prior information about the address.

, Saxena said Niti Aayog had sought time till April 5 to reply to whether it was in violation of the code. The Aayog’s Vice-Chairman, Rajiv Kumar’s criticism of Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s announcement on minimum basic income as a poll promise prompted the EC to send him a letter.

Delhi Police has registered an FIR against Twitter for a fake news item regarding the ingredients of the indelible ink, used for marking votes, being circulated on Twitter.
